so thankfully much-needed rain coming our way. let's look at temperatures now. it's off to a pleasant start on this thursday morning. we're in the low 60s in the suburbs and rural areas. upper 60s in washington. and right near the water, only in the 50s though in western maryland and much of west virginia, eastern shore mid 60s. and right at the beach, it's near 70. and if a few of those showers moving in, where you see passing showers in ohio, kentucky, and southern illinois. thas along a front that will be sweeping through the metro area, and points east by sunset and afternoon that by midnight. any chance of rain diminishes. there's a sml chance of thunder tonight. and partly cloudy on friday. tomorrow's highs, low 80s and a nice weekend to follow. how's the traffic? >>hecking the capital beltway, inner loop and outer loop as you travel between i-66 and i-95, pretty good shape thismorning. any overnight roadwork has all

been picked up, so no real concerns over there. elsewhere the american legion bridge volume increasing. that's th outer loop from the maryland perspective. outer loop, inner loop doing okay. reports of an accident 95 northbod in fredericksburg. we'll keep you updated on that. out to the rails we go and we're doing fine. unfortunately one delay is on the camden line train 841, 14 minutes behind schedule. joe, eun? >> thank you, jerry. breaking news out of prince geor's county right now. where an accident has killed three people after a violent collision between an suv and an ambulance. the crash happened around midnight on marlboro pike in district heights. news 4's megan mcgrath is live on the scene with the very latest on this. good morning, megan. >> reporr: good morning, joe. there's a tow truck that has arrived on the scene. looks like they're going to try to move some of these vehicles out of here so that they c reopen the roadway here. this was a violent crash. happened just around midnight.

now an ambulance had just gotten a call, an emergency call, they ha left the fire station, were traveling west on marlboro pike when off in the distance, they saw head lights. an suv, according to investigators, had crossed the center line, and was traveling at a high rate of speed in the wrong direction. so in the same lanes as the ambulance. and theywere set up for a head-on collision. >> driver error on the part of the driver of the suv, they ended up crossing over the doble lines into the oncoming path of the ambulance. the ambulance had to make an evasive maneuver so avoid the suv, but ty ended up side-swiping each other. certainly once you see the side of that ambulance you can see that anybody inside of there certainly would have sustained serious or fatal injuries. equipment was thrown down the street about 50 to 100 feet on board thatmbulance and you can just see th the vehicle, striking vehicle was traveling

at an excessive rate of speed to do that much damage to an ambulance. >> reporter: now, because the driver of t ambulance was able to swerve, avoiding that head-on collision, they were spared any serious injury. both the paramedics are okay. but again, you saw the tremendous damage done to the side of the ambulance. fortunately there was no patient inside. now as for thesuv, they then struck a utility pole, a brick wall, flipped over. that car flipped over onto its roof. all three men inside were killed. joe, back to you. >> megan, any word on whether the victims in that suv were wearing seat belts? >> no word yet. also no word on whether alcohol was a factor. they're not releasing the names of the victim either. >> thanks very much, megan. this morning police in prince george's county are also searching for a man who shot a teenage boy. th happened yesterday afternoon near barington and castleton drive in the kettering area. that's an area often used by teenagers who attend nearby largo high school. police say the teen was shot by

an adult male whom he knew. the teen is in the hospital in serious condition at this hour. well, getting a clearer picture this morning of thatster fieing standoff at the discovery channel headquarters. the person pviding those details is one of the hostages. chris wood tells oprah winfrey that he mouthed the word "run" to a guard while he was being held by gunman james lee. woods saidhe guard then shook his head yes. he and jim mcnulty, another hostage, appear on today's episode of the oprah winfrey show. >> the company that hires metro access drivers is taking a closer look at how those drivers are trained. mv transportion has authorized an independent investigation into the hiringnd training of drivers. itcomes in the wake of four complaints of sexual assault against metro access drivers. the company subcontracts with metro to operate the door-to-door service for disabled who are unable to use buses or rail service. mv already condts background checks and operates a 110-hour training program for new employees.

four fbi agents are accused of lying on their medical records to cer up steroid use. accordinto arrest affidavits they never reported prescription steroids and human growth hormone medical forms used to assess their fitness for duty. the fbi responded, saying quote, employees must be held to the highest standards of ethical conduct. the agents cannot use their weapons while the investigation proceeds. all eyes on the district are looking forward to the uture, with vincent gray on track to be the city's next mayor. gray and current mayor adrian fenty are both expected at a democratic unity breakfast this mornin and many are wondering whether the chge in power will bring a change in the school chancellor's position. elaine reus nes us live from the newsroom. good morning. >> good morning, joe. right now both sides are saying all the right things. michelle rhee says she won't speculate on whether vincent

its symbolically significant, of course, because of the historic divide between the protestant nation and the roman catholic church, dating way back to hry viii of course. the queen and the pope were actually together, we did have pictures moments ago of the queen and the pope together. they are actually meeting at this hour. later toda the pope will participate in a parade through edinburgh. a possible break this morning in a string robberies that has put university of maryland students on edge. one man is in custody accused of at least one of those robberies, and poli are still searching for two others. news 4's tracee wilkinss live in college park with more on this story. >> police have one suspect in custody. surveillance video helped to make that arrest happen. that surveillance video also shows two other suspects who are still on the loose. prie george's county police arrested 19-year-old chenor jah.

police say he and two other suspects robbed a student on august 8th. he was arrested at his home. this was one of five robberi in college park in an elen-day span. three of those robberies involved students. these robberies are violent. and some of them include weapons. now, police don't know ifhey were all connected at this point. what they do know is that they have one of their suspected robbers in custody, andthey're looking for more suspects. but thi is what they've been doing here at the university of maryland. putting up these signs, talking about crime times between 2:00 and 4:00 a.m. they've been asking udents to avoid going out by themselves at this time in the morning. this is when most of the robberies have been happening. this has been gong on since the beginning of the school year. it's definitely changed the culture here at the university of maryland. tracee wilkins, live in college park. >> all right, thank you. a virginia man is behind bars this morning accused of sexually assaulting a woman.

police say he met the woman using the online dating site eharmony. according to the loudoun county sheff's office, 34-year-old john evans met the 37-year-old victim on the site back in jue. in july she went to his home where officials say he held her against her will, and sexually assaulted her. sheriff's investigators are now concerned this woman was not evans' first victim. >> a situation like this, it's the same as someone who's been scammed. they don't want the embarrassment of someone knowing they've been scammed so they don't say anything. that's how these perpetrators continue to get by with their crimes. if anybody is familiar with this person we'd certainly like to hear from them. >> eharmony released a statement saying it's, quote, deeply saddened to hear about this terrible incident. theebsite also said it immediately closed evans' account and notified all of his matches not to communicate with him. a former high school football star will spend the next three decades in prison. tommy whack was convicted of

murder in a scheme that prosecutors say started on an adult chat line. prosecutors say nearly two years ago he and his cousin lured a man to a secluded area behind a landover middle school, where he was killed. investigators say that whack posted pictures online of himself with the gun that turned out to be the very same gun that they say he used in the murder. michael jackson's mother has filed a lawsuit in connection with herate son's death. katherine jackson sued the singer's concert promoter in a los angeles court. aeg had a series of comeback concerts featuring michael jacksoneforehis deh in june 2009. the suit claims the company did not provide key life-saving equipment or adequately monitor the cardiologist hired to care for her son. jackson's dr. conrad murray is not named as a defendant in this lawsuit but is frequently mentioned. in a separate case he pled not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in jackson's death. president obama goes on the offensive today, ahead of the

november elecons. he will travel to connticut where taxes will likely be his main message. in recent appearances, he's accused rublicans of holding tax cuts hostage where 97% of americans. extending tax cuts to those who earn more than $250,000 has become the subject of a major debate on capitol hill, and today he'll speak at an event for connecticut attorney general richard blumenthal. former republican vice presidential candate sarah palin is urging party unity. she says it's time for republican party bosses to put aside their differences after several tea party wins. the former alaskan governor spoke to about 1,000 people last night at a gala in oklahoma. she td the enthusiastic crowd that vots have six weeks to turn things around, and rein in the federal government. rightow hurricane igor is still far from land but it's kicking up waves as it churns in the atlantic ocean. category 4 storm could cause dangerous rip currents along the

are open. elsewhere the rush hour really loaded up. i looked as close as i could. i couldn't find anything blocking. just a lotof heavy volume. 66. several long stretches including fair oaks most of the way to the capital beltway. rails all looking good. joe, eun? >> jerry, thanks so much. more now on that breaking news we've been following all morning long. a violent collision between an suv and an ambulance killed three people. this happened overnight on marlboro pike in district heights. this was meg mcgrath live on the scene. she has the latest. good morning, megan. >> reporter: good morning, joe. you can see behind me here that the tow trucks are on the scene, trying ttow both ofhe vehicles out of here so they can reopen the road. this was a violent crash involving these two vehicles. ree people are now dead. the side of the ambulance is ripped wide open, an indication of just how violent the collision was.

fortunately paramedics had not yet picked up their patient. >> the right-hand side ofhat ambulance is totally obliterated. the patient compartment area, that whole wall is removed and exposed to the exterior. >> reporter: it happened at around midnight. investigators say the ambulance had just left the station on an emergency call, lights and sirens were anniveated. as the ambulance traveled west on marlboro pike they could see head lights headed straight towards them. investigators say the suv was barreling down the wrong side of the road. >> initial indications were driver error on the part of the driver of the suv. they ended up crossing over the doue lines, into the oncoming path of the ambulance. the ambulance had to make an evasive maneuver to avoid the suv, buthey ended up side-swipingach other. >> equipment was thrown down the street about 50 to 100 feet on board that ambulance. and you can just see that the vehicle, the striking vehicle was traveling an excessive

rate of speed to do that much damage to an ambulance. >> after hitting the ambulance, the suv struck a brick wall and a utility pole. the vehicle then flipped onto its roof. all three men inside were killed. now, because the driver of the ambulance was able to swerve out of the way a little bit, the suv missed the front portion of the amlance, the cab portion. so the two paramedic did not sustain any seriousinjuries, they're going to be okay. now, they have not released the names of the three people w died. no word on whether cohol was a factor in this. >> megan mcgrath reporting live. thanks very much. police in fairfax county need your help finding a manho tried to rob a woman as she sat in her car in the middle of the afternoon. police say the victim was stopped at red light at lee highway and merrilee drive last wednesday when a man two cars back got out, implied he had a weapon and danded money. the light turned green and the woman drove away unharmed.

and because of the surveillance video. they were able to bring one person in to custody. but that same rveillance video is showing that there may be two other suspects still on the loose. prince willam county police arrested chernor jah of silver springs. police say jah and two other students roed a student. jah was arrested in his home. this is a numberf robberies that happened here in college park after campus since scho began. three of those robberies involve students. these robberies are violent. sometimes these folks have weapons and place are not saying that all of these suspects are connected or that all of thes robberies are being done by the same group of people. they could be looking for multiple robbers. now this is what's been happeng here around campus since these robberies. they've been putting up these signs, talking about what they're calling crime time from 2:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. they're advising students not to walk alone, to be careful during those hours and not come out at

all if they can avoid to. because this is the time of morning when theseobberies are actually happening. they are looking for more suspects and there are lots of questions about these cases. some of them are very different. police are still investigating. tracee wilkins, live this morning in college park. >> tracy, thanks very much. >> we have a traffic alert for ome of you who travel through downtown washington. starting at noon tomorrow, fourth street between l street and maschusetts avenue will become a two-way street. that stretch of fourth street is currently one-way southbound. there will also be a new traffic signal at the intersection of fourth and i streets nothwest. the changes were made to increase safety in that area that's seen new housing and commercial development. phase two of the dulles metro project could end up costing $1.3 billion more than originally expected. the new metro line would eventually extendrom falls church to dulles airport and loudoun county. phase one will cost around $2.75 billion.

now, according to the metro washington airport authority it looks like phase two will cost just as much and those costs could be passed along to the people who use the dulles toll road through the higher tolls. officials are look nothing building the metrorail stop at dulles airport above ground rather than underground and that could save $6 4r0 million. customers with chase bank may still have trouble accessing their money online today. the company's wsite went down monday night. technicians got the system back up yesterday morning but problems lingered throughout the day. chase says more than 16 million online banking customers. the problem did not affect the company's atm or automated telephone system. well, today the u.s. snate is expected to pass a bill to give small businesses some financial help. cnbc's courtney reagan now joins us live with more on that story. good morning, courtney. >> good morning to you, joe. the senate is expected to vte today on this long-stalled bill to boost lending to small

arlington, prince george's montgomery and fairfax counties. to the st, near 60 around the blue ridge, shenandoah valley and many of the areas in maryland. down into the upper 50s as well as panhandle of west virginia. and around the bay in southern maryland, around the northern neck of tide water region, weather watch up farther in the west of the mountains, many locations in the low 50s. western maryland, much of northern west virginia, and on the eastern shore, the mid 60s, and at the atlantic beaches it's near 70 now. and the view from space over the last 12 hours showing these clouds coming in from the midwest ahead of a front that is triggering some rain in this area of green and blue. light to moderate rain moving through ohio and kentucky. after that this evening farther to the east. and out in the tropics,yes, things are very active. but thankfully not threatening the atlantic seaboard.

tropical storm karl will be moving into southern mexico. powerful hurricane ior and weaker hurricane julia. both of these are going to stay out in the atlantic. but igor is a powerful hurricane with winds 145 miles an hour. maintained that similar strength for the last several days. thankfully still the latest tracks are continuing to pull it farther and farther east of bermuda. great rease there. but close enough to the atlantic seaboard. maybe only 800 miles away. but still enough of a perhaps close call for uso give us some heavy surf at the atlantic beaches, and some rip currents later in the weekend, and into next week. for this morning, for the students waiting for buses. it shoulde a plsant morning. the air is soft and mild in the 60s to near 70 and it will climb to the upper 70s to near 80 by noon. and a thickening cloud cover during the afternoon as we reach the mid 80s and a blustery southerly wind. overnight tonight after sunset, areasfrom the blue ridge east will have passing showers earlier than that. so farther west, maybe some thunder, as well. then partly cloudy tomorrow

following all morning. a deadly crash involving an suv and an ambulance in prince george's county. three men in the suv were killed when the vehicle collided, and the suv went out of control in the 5600 block of marlbo pike in district heights. news 4's megan mcgrath is there live with the latest. good morning. >> good morning, eun. they're making a lot of progress in terms of clearing the scene here. you can see that they've got both the ambulance and the suv on tow trucks. they're going to try to get them out o the area, clear things up so they can reopen this section of marlboro pike. it's been closed since midnight. this was a very violent crash. now according to investigator the ambulance had st left the station, they were respoing to a 911 call. they were traveling west on marlboro pike when off in the distance they saw head lights ming straight toward them. investigators say the suv had crossed the center line, and was traveling the wrong way down marlboro pike. now the driver of the ambulae swerved to try to get out of the way. the suv then slammed into the

side of the ambulance. >> the right-hand side of that ambulance is totally obliterated. the patient compartment area, that whole wall is remov and exposed to the exterior. the suv traveled about another 120 feet striking a utility pole fore coming to rest on its roof. arriving firefighters and paramedics assessed the patients and determined the three alt males inside that suv were deceased. >> now becausehe drivers of the ambulance was able to swerve, the suv missed the cab portion of the ambulance so the pair metics are oky. there was no patient in the back. they had not yet picked up the patient. they had just left the station and were on the wayo pi up the -- or to respond to the 911 call. so that's very fortunate. in terms of what happened here, whether alcohol was a factor, that's still under investigation. no names have been releasedn terms of the victims. again, all three individuals, all three men were in that suv
